Kandy sights

Kandy is the second largest city in Sri Lanka and it is small and large at the same time. It is beautiful and messy, it is hectic and peaceful, it is old and modern, and it was here the last kingdom resided before the British ended the monarchy in 1815.
In the centre of Kandy is the manmade lake that is next to the Tooth Temple, Sri Dalada Maligawa. Around it are busy shopping streets with vendors selling everything and nothing.

One to two days is usually enough to hang out downtown, and many tourists only see this part of Kandy. If you spend a few days more, check out the hilly areas in the outskirts of Kandy where you can totally enjoy the beauty of the nature and lower your pulse. A few places are suggested under Kandy lodging.

Here are a few highlights from Kandy:

The Tooth Temple, Sri Dalada Maligawa

I recommend going for the morning or evening Puja ceremony which is between 9:30-10:30 or 18:30-19:30. This is when they open the door to the holy room where the tooth is kept. Keep to the left in the line going up the stairs. Try to avoid weekends and Poya days as it will be very crowded. As in all temples you need to cover shoulders and knees. If you want to bring a templeflower you can buy them outside for Rs 100 or 200, as well as incense.

If you want to learn more about Buddhism, visit the Buddhist museum next door.

Botanical Gardens
Beautiful, large area with amazing trees.
Kandy Lake
Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha Statue

This is the white Buddha you can see from most parts of town. It is a really nice temple with amazing view of the town.

Udawattakale park

Get away from the hustle & bustle of Kandy town and walk around in this peaceful jungleforest. During the days of the Kandyan kingdom, Udawattakele was known as "Uda Wasala Watta" in Sinhalese meaning "the garden above the royal palace".
